We heard about Skull Rock, and we set out to find it, among some elephantine boulders in a legendary spiritual preserve bigger than the Bootheel, where two great American ecosystems bump into each other in Southern California. The highland Mojave Desert and the lowland Colorado Desert share a seam along seventy miles within Joshua Tree National Park. The Joshua Tree, a desert lily pollinated exclusively by the Pronuba moth, thrives only in the Mojave. Not to worry, the Colorado spawns a cholla cactus garden. And Skull Rock waits, as it did for Gram Parsons, Eric Burdon, U2, and millions more, all awestruck by this pair of living deserts.
