Hope and Change

Canton lured me back for an overnight, where I went to a free show at the college. A young comedian mesmerized the crowd with juggling and jokes, then the juggler asked the young lady sitting next to me to assist him onstage. He asked her where she was from. “Vietnam,” she replied, in perfect English. When she sat back down, I asked her home town. “Ho Chi Minh City,” she said cheerfully, matter-of-factly. And I smiled, hoping that some healing has happened in this country, at least among our youth.
